How to Format an eBook

First of all, let us tell you why it’s important to know how to format an eBook properly! eBook s are the fastest growing segment of the industry release. Every year, more and more new and established authors digitally publish their fiction, non-fiction, poetry, screenplays, how-to guides and scripts as eBook s. One of the most common obstacles that authors face is how to format an eBook in order to be read on multiple platforms and eBook reading devices as possible. Here is the Amazon Kindle: Sony Reader, Apple iPhone and iPod Touch, just to start with.

Some tips on how to format an eBook to help you make it more successful:

Formatting

Ensure that your book looks modern and clean, with readable font’s styles and sizes. Remember that it will be read on either phones or screens. So, you should make sure that the spacing is moderate and readable. Remember that when it comes to formatting your eBook, nothing makes it look better than simplicity!

Keep it Simple

Do not forget that most eBook s should be simple, unless you choose specifically, a fixed format to handle a lot of graphics, tables that have the ability to flow. This means that the reader can choose the size of the text and some other elements as font, line spacing and margins. By keeping the simplest possible format, the risk of introducing anything that could be too annoying to the reader is reduced. After all, you want to focus on what you have written, not what it seems to be. Your goal here should be to deliver your message, whether you are trying to make profit of it or just connecting with people interested in your concepts instead of becoming an expert at Mobi ePub/Calibre or many other formats/platforms available. In common words; I would say, worry about starting making MONEY! Crawl, before walk!

Endpoints:

Do not use double spaces after full stops. You can use the; Find and Replace’ to remove them. You may have been taught to use it in school, but in an eBook, that makes bad text and it looks unprofessional, and of course, professional typographers are not in use. If you are a heavy-handed typist, you may also want to check if there are some other spaces. Accidental triples are aware of the existence!

Hyphens and line breaks:

Disable hyphenation and be sure not to force line breaks. If you add a script manually, there is a danger that the final result will be caught in the middle of a random line that looks like a mistake. Similarly, do not try to correct the widows and orphans.

Number of pages:

Do not include page numbers (Unless you are publishing for Google Play, where you need to upload a PDF. Find out how to publish eBook using Google Play with ‘Write an eBook AZ’!). Some eBook files do not have page numbers. Some devices assigned page numbers depending on the configuration of the reader. Reading devices usually tell the reader how advanced she is in the book/E. Gram. ;Page X of Y’ or ‘43 percent complete.’ This also means that the page numbers in the table of contents will be irrelevant.

Paragraphs:

Decide whether you are going to use block or management on paragraphs and follow the same format everywhere. Block paragraphs have a line space between them; whereas paragraphs management has no line space between them, but have indent the first line in place. If you use run-on paragraphs, remember not to indent the first paragraph of each chapter. And do not use the tab key to indent paragraphs; use the ‘first line indent’ Word on the tape function.

Chapters:

When you want to start a new chapter, insert a page break. Do not just keep pressing the Enter key until a new page! Use the ‘Show unprintable characters’ to help you get rid of extra line breaks at the end of each chapter.

Styles:

Use the Styles palette Word to prepare their chapter titles, subtitles, body text, etc. If you do not know how to use this or any other tool in Word, there is a lot of information within our ‘Write an eBook AZ guide.’ Before submitting your manuscript, make sure you have applied the appropriate style to every part of your text.

Out of the Ordinary:

If you want to use ‘fantasy’ format, such as headers, footers, borders, special fonts, text color, multi-column layouts, etc., you may need to consider opting for a fixed-layout electronic book instead of a resettable EPUB. Certain decorative elements such as drop caps can be inserted as images, but if there are a lot of them, it better off you get some professional help with the conversion to make sure you get the result you are looking for.  You can include images in EPUB and MOBI doubt files, but some electronic readers will show grayscale. So, make sure that grayscale images work as well as color. How to format an eBook, Step by Step!

The above listed and explained tips will help you a long way to successfully have your eBook formatted for self publishing. However, below are additional tips that could come in handy as long as formatting an eBook is concerned:

  1. The Page Is Dead: In traditional print publication, the notion of the ‘page’ is critical. All pages have numbers, and these numbers probably has page reference in the table of contents or index made. With eBook s, the notion of the page is turned upside down, literally. All eBook readers have a different idea of what constitutes a page, as they may have different heights and widths screen, or the number of pages which may change depending on whether the reader is holding its iPhone vertically or horizontally. The number of pages may also change if the reader increases the font size or change the font style, or chooses to read your book with double line spacing rather than a single space.

So, in short, try to avoid page numbers, especially for the long form narrative. If you must include page numbers, then, limit their outputs iPhone with PDF files, because they do a good job of keeping the format (although PDF files are a format horrible electronic reading).

  1. Keep the Simple Format: Readers buy their books from the words and stories, not the format. Complicated format can get in the way readers consume the words in his book. You want to ensure that your book is optimized to be read as plain text, which is like most e-readers show their book.

  1. Avoid Bad Habits Common Format: Print publishing is very forgiving, because while their manuscript is the way they want it to look on the screen, usually prints well. eBooks are less tolerant.

Some of the most common mistakes in formatting iPhone s include: The use of labels or spaces instead of feature script of the Word; the use of multiple paragraph breaks to designate page breaks (creates blank pages in your electronic book); and the use of multiple body styles of text rather than text only ‘normal’ (text searches creates inconsistent). The use of millions of text boxes, unnecessary images, especially external links do not only look bad when it is highly repetitive, but it takes your audience away from your eBook!

  1. Publish Your Book in Many eBook Formats as Possible: It’s impossible to predict what electronic reading device or platform you will use for your reader to read your eBook. They could read it online through a web browser or it could be downloaded to your home computer to print. You can also read it on your Kindle, or you may want to read it on your iPhone or Blackberry.

You may also want to read the same book on multiple devices simultaneously. Therefore, you must publish in multiple eBook formats that readers can read your book in their own way.

Popular formats include HTML (readable in web browsers), .txt (plain text, readable on almost everything), PDF (good for books for which the strict format is essential for the enjoyment of reading [picture books, books with charts, graphs, tables of contents and indexes]), epub (an industry open eBook format used by more and more devices and e-reading applications), and .mobi (used by the Kindle).

  1. Avoid DRM: DRM, or; digital rights management’ refers to systems that seek to prevent illegal copying or piracy of a digital work, as an eBook or music. Customers hate DRM, DRM, because treated as a criminal and prevents them from enjoying your book in the way they want to enjoy it.

Do not use DRM with your eBook. Market research shows that DRM cannot prevent piracy, and it just irritates customers. In fact, research shows that to sell more books without DRM books with DRM.

Now that you have the basic format for your eBook, it is time to move to the finest details.

Some suggestions on how to format an eBook using Word, and convert it to a PDF

Illustrations:

EBooks often include photos, pictures, graphs and other illustrations. However, it is important to note that because illustrations contribute to a larger file size, some e-book publishers only accept text submissions. Meanwhile, there is more than one way to add illustrations to your eBook, but one method is to use a scanner and then convert the pictures to .gif or .jpg files. Then you can format the photos as you like using software such as Photoshop or GIMP. You cannot really add illustrations directly into Word (you can, but it’s a nuisance) so if you plan to create an E-Book with lots of pictures, it is a better idea to use a desktop publishing program. Always leave a sufficient margin between the illustration and text, and add captions when necessary.

Preliminary information:

Preliminary contents include: cover a copyright page; acknowledgments, and a table of contents. To implement the copyright page, take a look at the page of a copyright book printing and use the same formatting and information, using your own name and book title, of course. Shelve unnecessary items such as the Library of Congress information. The only time you will need an ISBN is if you are going to sell electronic copies of the book on disk at a later date. The table of contents is easy – Word automatically generates a table of contents. But with ‘Write an eBook AZ guide’ we use other useful and better option.  With an electronic book that is better to mark the first page “1”, even if the title page. Printed books do not follow this format, but it works well for eBooks. Back issue for any information you choose to include at the end of the eBook, as an index, bio, and contact information.

Time for Acrobat

Now that you have all the formatting in Word, it’s time to convert the file to PDF. This is very easy to do. Just use the “Print” command in Word and choose ‘Save as file’ in the ‘General’ drop down menu. Select ‘Acrobat PDF’ as the file type and choose the ‘destination’ as ‘file.’ Click the ‘Print’ point and voila! Then, your file will be a PDF, and can be read in Adobe Acrobat.

Try Adobe Acrobat DC free for 30 days

If you own a full version of Acrobat, there are more options to play. For example, the full program allows you to Hotlink all URLs in the eBook – underline links or make them a different color. So, I’ll stay out and your readers will not get lost. Any way, it is unnecessary to create direct links in the original Word document, as they will disappear during the conversion process.. Keep this step for Adobe.
